Then,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storypositive.com\/digitalisation-two-cloud-native-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\">the second article<\/a>&nbsp;covered Cloud Native Applications. T<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">rain an infinite number of monkeys to use typewriters and they will, at some point, come up with the script of&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shakespeare.org.uk\/explore-shakespeare\/shakespedia\/shakespeares-plays\/hamlet\/#\" target=\"_blank\">William Shakespeare&#8217;s play Hamlet<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">&nbsp;(quite by chance). It&#8217;s an oblique literary reference to a philosophical thought experiment conjured up by the French Mathemetician and Philosopher&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89mile_Borel\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c9mile Borel<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">&nbsp;in 1913 in his paper&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hal.archives-ouvertes.fr\/jpa-00241832\/document\" target=\"_blank\">M\u00e9canique Statistique et Irr\u00e9versibilit\u00e9<\/a>&nbsp;[in French].<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, it&#8217;s often said that if you ask a thousand IT folk what the term DevOps means, you get a thousand different answers&#8230; Presumably until one of them just happens to land on the correct answer (quite by chance).<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it can often seem easier to define what DevOps <i>isn&#8217;t<\/i> rather than what it is. People faced with no explanation will invent one. But, when it comes to DevOps the information is out there (there&#8217;s some excellent resources listed later).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4b9a1df elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4b9a1df\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8529a51\" data-id=\"8529a51\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-99897ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"99897ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Ethos<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1679b61 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1679b61\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f90c6ae\" data-id=\"f90c6ae\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59f0bf6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59f0bf6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Speaking of Greeks, it was they who came up with the word Ethos, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexico.com\/definition\/ethos\" target=\"_blank\">Lexico<\/a>&nbsp;defines as: &#8220;The characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its attitudes and aspirations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a great fit for what DevOps is (an ethos), so far so vague.&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Back, then, to what DevOps is not (anti-defintions, of a sort):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Developers doing operations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Operators doing development<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">A double-headed hydra that can somehow do both<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">An army of infinite monkeys<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">42<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">But trying to define by negatives is a fool&#8217;s errand. So, here is&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.org\/books\/OL27188693M\/DevOps\" target=\"_blank\">another definition<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">:<\/span><br><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3f77ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3f77ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Stitching together the various definitions and anti-definitions allows us to arrive at an understanding that one of the things DevOps is about &#8211; arguably the main thing &#8211; is teams working together to achieve quality deliveries without introducing unnecessary delay. What can we deduce from this? Well, if you take away just one thing from this article, let it be this:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15cc6d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"15cc6d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><i>If you have a DevOps team in your organisation, you are by definition, and therefore automatically, doing DevOps wrong<\/i><br><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f507ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6f507ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">For an ethos to manifest in the attitudes and aspirations of a team does not mean you should create a team with that name. That&#8217;s knee-jerk reactionism, which creates it&#8217;s own organisational structural issues for the future. Rather, creating an ethos involve infusing the culture and spirit of DevOps into existing (and future) teams created for delivering operational products.<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Another way to look at this is that DevOps is about breaking down silos and creating an atmosphere where the business and technology work in tandem. It&#8217;s the same spirit, the same ethos, as DevOps, but with the focus on keeping software running, stable, and in efficient operation at all <i>required<\/i> times. I&#8217;ve added the word <i>required<\/i> because there may be times when a software resource should not be up and running &#8211; if it is up at such times, then it&#8217;s behaviour is unreliable.<\/p><p>One way of looking at it is that SRE is the post-production sibling to DevOps. For SRE, it may make sense to have a team that wears an eponymous badge, but the ethos is grounded in the same roots as DevOps. This means the SRE team need to work in conjunction with the teams that deliver code and must be able to reject code that could jeopardise the reliability of the site.
